WHY WE STARTED
Where it all began
Our director, Sophie Dodd, battled severe anxiety and depression from the age of 16. Throughout these struggles, she always turned to and relied on her coach to open up about her struggles. At the time, her coach was young and in his first coaching role and despite all this he said the right things.
Eventually, Sophie realised that her coach had been under significant pressure and inadequately trained with little experience in mental health. While he had said the right things, he was unsupported in this and he also very easily could have said the wrong things.
From there, Sophie decided to start a campaign to start the conversation in sport about mental health and having spoken to more and more coaches, she then realised that coaches were not receiving the appropriate mental health first aid training that they needed.
That is when Mental Health in Sport CIC was born!
